Frequently Asked Questions
What is Endodontics?
Endodontics, commonly known as “root canal treatment” is a dental procedure that involves treating the inside of the tooth. The internal structure, called the “pulp,” is a delicate tissue that can easily become inflamed or infected. This typically happens due to tooth decay (caries) but may also result from other causes, such as cracks, gum (periodontal) disease, or trauma (injury to the tooth). If pulp inflammation or infection is left untreated, it can lead to pain, swelling, and the formation of an abscess in the jawbone.
Preserving the natural tooth is generally more beneficial than extraction or using an artificial replacement. It aligns with the natural, healthy state of your teeth and mouth and is often a more cost-effective solution over time.
How successful is root canal treatment?
Root canal treatment is one of the most reliable and successful dental treatments available today, particularly with advancements in techniques, materials, and equipment. However, the prognosis (likelihood of success) can vary depending on the specific procedure, the condition of the tooth, and the individual patient. This makes the initial consultation a crucial step. We encourage you to ask questions during this time to ensure you fully understand your recommended treatment options, and their prognoses.
Why am I being referred to an endodontist?
Although general dentists are qualified to perform root canal treatment, they often refer their patients to an endodontist to ensure the highest standard of care, much like how a GP might refer a patient to a cardiologist or another specialist.
An endodontist is a dental specialist in the field of endodontics who has completed an additional three years of postgraduate university training on top of a general dental degree. Endodontists are experts in performing both routine and complex root canal procedures, including retreatment of previously treated canals that did not fully heal, endodontic microsurgery, management of dental trauma, whitening of discolored teeth that have undergone root canal treatment, and diagnosing and managing certain types of oral and facial pain.
Significant advancements in endodontic diagnosis and treatment techniques have improved outcomes dramatically. At Apex, we integrate these innovations into your care to provide the highest quality treatment. We use state-of-the-art technology, including endodontic microscopes, rotary equipment, ultrasonics, electronic apex locators, digital radiography, and the latest microsurgical techniques, ensuring optimal results for your dental health.
Our endodontists collaborate closely with your general dentist and other dental specialists to achieve the best possible outcome for you.
What are the alternative options to root canal treatment?
The alternative to root canal treatment is tooth extraction. While this might seem like a simpler and more affordable option initially, an extracted tooth typically requires replacement to avoid long-term issues with your remaining teeth and overall oral health.
When your tooth can be successfully saved through root canal treatment, it is generally the preferred choice. Preserving your natural tooth supports the healthy structure of your mouth and is often a more cost-effective solution over time.
If, however, root canal treatment is not the most suitable option for your situation and another approach would be better, we will discuss this with you and refer you back to your general dentist. Our priority is ensuring the best possible outcome for you and your dental health.
Is root canal treatment painful?
Many patients referred to us for root canal treatment arrive experiencing pain or discomfort. This procedure is designed to alleviate that pain, providing significant relief. Thanks to advancements in dental techniques and our specialised care, most patients report feeling comfortable and relaxed throughout their treatment.
Your comfort is our top priority, and we ensure it is expertly managed at every stage of your care, from the initial consultation to follow-up appointments.
Can I expect pain after treatment?
In most cases, you can return to work, school, or daily activities immediately after your root canal treatment appointment. The vast majority of our patients experience little to no discomfort following their procedure. If any discomfort does occur, it is typically mild, short-lived, and can be effectively managed with standard medications. Your practitioner will discuss this with you and, if necessary, create a tailored plan to ensure your recovery is as smooth as possible.
What if I am an anxious patient?
We understand that the thought of needing root canal treatment can feel overwhelming. Whether you’ve had a difficult dental experience in the past or are currently in pain, our endodontists are highly trained and experienced in caring for anxious patients. Rest assured, your comfort is our top priority and is carefully managed at every stage of your treatment, from the initial consultation to follow-up care.
At Apex, we offer the option of treatment under “twilight” or “conscious” sedation. This is administered by a qualified anaesthetist in the comfort of our practice. When appropriate, treatment can often be completed in a single visit, and you’ll be able to return home after a short, monitored recovery period overseen by our registered nurse. This convenient approach eliminates the need for a hospital visit.
Why can’t I just take antibiotics instead of having root canal treatment?
When the delicate internal structure of a tooth, known as the “pulp,” becomes inflamed and infected, it cannot heal itself and begins to deteriorate. Once the pulp tissue dies, it loses its blood supply, preventing antibiotics—delivered through the blood supply—from reaching the infection site. As a result, the only effective way to eliminate bacteria within the pulp and thoroughly disinfect the tooth for the long term is through root canal treatment.
Antibiotics are typically used only as a supplementary measure alongside root canal treatment, specifically for infections that are accompanied by severe facial swelling, fever, or general feelings of illness
Do I need to see my general dentist after root canal treatment?
Your general dentist plays a crucial role in your root canal treatment journey. In many cases, you will need to return to your dentist after root canal treatment to have the top of your tooth restored, ensuring its strength and functionality. Regular checkups and ongoing dental maintenance with your general dentist remain essential for your overall oral health.
At Apex, we work closely with your general dentist to ensure you achieve the best possible outcome for your dental care.
I have a medical condition. Is it safe for me to have root canal treatment?
There are generally no medical conditions that would prevent root canal treatment from being performed. With your consent, your endodontist may need to consult with your doctor(s) to clarify your health status before proceeding with treatment.
If you have any health concerns, please include them on the medical information form, along with a detailed list of your current medications and dosages. Be sure to bring this list to your consultation appointment. Additionally, if there are any changes to your medical circumstances between appointments, please inform your practitioner to ensure your care is appropriately managed.
What fees should I expect?
At Apex, we are committed to transparency when it comes to the cost of your root canal treatment. After assessing your tooth during the consultation, we will provide you with a detailed management plan, including an itemized breakdown of costs and the expected number of appointments. If you’d like to check your health fund rebate, we can supply the relevant item numbers for your convenience.
We offer HICAPS facilities for on-the-spot claiming of health fund rebates. Gap payments can be made on the day of your consultation, treatment, and review using credit cards (VISA, MasterCard) or EFTPOS. Additionally, we are pleased to provide care for Veteran’s Affairs gold card holders.
